One of my favorite shows growing up was, Lost In Space. I always loved when Robot would yell out his warnings. It got me to the edge of my seat. What was about to happen? How would they make it through?
In Colossians 2, Paul is sending out Robot's warning about man being placed where he doesn't belong. How man's philosophy and traditions can enslave us to something that God has set us free from.
The problem is, pedestals, we all put people on them. May it be a good friend that we value I put from, our favorite pastor that we love to listen to, or maybe it is a celebrity that seems to have it all together. Sooner or later they will all fall off of the pedestal that we put them on. I confess this is a problem that I struggle with.
The problem when we do set people on pedestals, we become enslaved to them or our idea of how we want to be like them. If I could be like them syndrome. No matter how hard we try to copy and be like them, we get lead away from who God wants us to be. Following after man as the example and not God. Then when they do or say something that knocks them off of the pedestal we may find ourselves in an emotinquake from their fall from our opinion of them. This can even cause the relationship to be destroyed.

So why is putting others on pedestals so dangerous?
We no longer value the simplicity of God's Word but get caught up in a philosophy, tradition, or deception that takes us away from God and His plan for us. We try to be something that we are not meant to be. It is all based on man's opinion and not God's standards.
This is what Paul is warning about. Becoming enslaved to man's thinking. We are told to be on the watch for this and not to fall into this type of trap. We are made complete in Him. We don't need man to tell us what to do but trust the Lord in His leading of our lives.
