I have never had someone say come see my new car and it turns out to be a wreck. Neither have I seen someone in new clothes that are dirty, tattered worn out rags. Yet, many of us after accepting Jesus as our Savior still walk around believing the same old lies about ourselves that we believed before we accepted Jesus. Why is the past so hard to put behind us? I believe that it is because we don't really understand what it means to be a new creation.
Just like when Jesus told Nicodemus that he must be born again and Nicodemus didn't understand that Jesus was talking about a spiritual birth. When we accept Jesus as our Savoir and Lord our spirit is made live with the power of the Holy Spirit. We are no longer dead to what God says but are dead to our sins and past. We have become new yet, we choose to walk in the past and hold on to our hurts so that we can keep thT band aid of bitterness on for protection and don't let God heal the hurt.
My friend, Sue Cramer, posted; "Replaying offenses only fuels and empowers the negative effects of abuse and betrayal. Freedom comes when we release our grip on wishing that it never happened and choose to trust God today and tomorrow." This so fits on being a new creation in Jesus. By holding on to the past doesn't allow for the Spirit to work His healing in us when we keep reliving it over and over what people have done to us. This is how bitterness keeps it's control on us, causing anger, discourag, negative self talk and the like to fester and grow. As that grows we hold on tight not giving it to God because we don't trust and think we know what is best to keep from hurting.
It is hard letting go of the past. Have you ever seen a video of a butterfly coming out of the cacoon? It looks like it is on it's last breath as it sits and waits for it's wings to dry. That is how it is with us in letting go of the past by reliving it we are struggling to come out of the cacoon but once we let God have, let Him do the work on our hearts then we will soon be able to soar above all the hurt and pain as the new creation that God has created us to be.
