We have an Advocate. It is not Matlock, Perry Mason, nor any other lawyer. As a matter of fact, our Advocate came and fulfilled the Law.
““Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.”
Matthew 5:17-18 NKJV
It is interesting that in the list of synonyms for advocate the word lawyer is not included.
- exponent, advocator, apostle, backer, booster, champion, expounder, espouser, friend, gospeler (or gospeller), herald, hierophant, high priest, paladin, promoter, proponent, protagonist, supporter, true believer, tub-thumper, white knight
Easton's Bible Dictionary definition of advocate is: (Gr. parakletos), one who pleads another's cause, who helps another by defending or comforting him. It is a name given by Christ three times to the Holy Ghost (John 14:16; 15:26; 16:7, where the Greek word is rendered "Comforter," q.v.). It is applied to Christ in 1 John 2:1, where the same Greek word is rendered "Advocate," the rendering which it should have in all the places where it occurs.
Why do we need an Advocate? Because we have an accuser that not only will try to make us look bad before God, as we see in Revelation 12:10, but will also use negative self-talk against us. We also see this in the book of Job, where Satan goes before God and accuses Job of only loving God because God had His hand on His life.
Jesus is our Advocate, He has wiped our slate clean by His blood. He is our Backer, by paying the price for our sins. He is our Champion, by defeating Satan. He is our Friend and calls us His friends. He is our High Priest, that offered up the final sacrifice for sin. He is our Supporter and True Believer, we can turn to Him when we feel all alone. He is our White Knight, protecting and defending our honor.
