We have and enemy whose chief goal to to steal, kill and destroy. One of the things he wants to steal and destroy is our peace. Whenever we start to get attacked our normal, fleshly reaction is fight or flight mode. This reaction tends to lead to panic, fear, and most of all the loss of peace.
Interesting that we are told shod our feet with the gospel of peace. Our feet our the foundation of our body. If they are not taken care of properly the whole body suffers. A soldier is on his feet a lot and do a lot of walking, if they had shoes that didn't fit good, caused blisters, or made their feet hurt they would not be able to do their job. The Roman soldier's shoes were equipped with spikes on the bottom so that they would be able to hold their ground when they were fighting.
Our foundation on which we stand is the gospel of peace and Jesus is the cornerstone. It is the work that He did on the cross that brings us peace with God. It is not anything that we have done because our works are stained with sin.
What is the gospel of peace? We find the gospel in a nutshell in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; "For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,". That is the foundation that we are able to stand firm on. The work that Jesus did that brings us peace with God.
This is the spikes in our shoes that we are able to stay stable and stand firm when we go through a trial. Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." His peace is not something that comes and goes like the peace that is in this world. It is stable and has not changed over the last 2000 years. There is no need for us to be afraid of what is going on in this world.
In Isaiah 53:5, we read that His peace was foretold; "But He was bruised for our transgressions, He was wounded for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed." The peace that we received from Jesus is the fact that He took our punishment for our sins and covered us with His blood that we can have peace once and for all with God.
Those mind games, negative self talk, the condemnation... that satan throws at us is powerless because of Jesus. No matter what he tries to throw at us Jesus is there holding his keys when He defeated him at the cross. Now that he is as powerless as a toothless lion, that we have peace that passes all human understanding. Thank You Jesus!
