Just before the Hebrews started their marching around Jericho they celebrated Passover, while Rahab was waiting for her's. Jericho had been on lock down, no one in or out since the Hebrews crossed the Jordan. Just how long, them men had healded up from being circumcised, they celebrated Passover and Joshua had met with the Commander of the Lord's army and was told how this whole thing, the wall, was going down. If the people of Jericho were afraid before think how they were feeling now not knowing when the attack was going to take place. Meanwhile, Rahab and her family were tucked away inside her house and the scarlet cord hanging out the window. Surely, what happened next was not at all what the people of Jericho were expecting.
Who would ever expect an invading force to parade around the wall of the city, carrying a funny looking box and blowing on horns. Not sure what tune they were playing, When The Hebrews Go Marching In, Ring Around Jericho or Jousha Fought The Battle of Jericho, at the end of the first day the people of Jericho probably had a good laugh and maybe a sigh of relief. Some may have wondered if they were just doing that to find a weakness in the wall. Rahab was probably wondering what God was going to do. This happened for six days. No attack just the parade. Surely there were some people looking down from the top of the wall yelling down jokes at the like, "Oh that is so scary", "Hey, is that the only tune you know?" maybe even "What are you, a band of chickens?" Wonder what Rahab was thinking as she heard all this going on.
Then on the seventh day they didn't stop like the other days, they just kept marching around and around 7 times then they just stood there with a loud and long blast on the horns. Then suddenly the wall started to crumble. Can you imagine the excitement in Rahab's heart, rejoicing because her bondage in and to that city is almost gone. On the other side there is the thing going on both sides of her house that the wall was falling down, some of her family may have been wondering if it would stop at her house. Sure enough Rahab's house was the only part of the wall left standing. Imagine what it was like in Rahab's house with the shaking and noise of the rest of the wall collapsing. Isn't it interesting that it was the 7th day that Rahab was freed from the bondage of that city and able to enter into God's rest.
We see in chapter six of Joshua that Rahab was no longer an outcast living on the outside but that she lived among the Hebrews. She married one of the leaders of the Hebrews. Gave birth to Boaz who later married Ruth. Perhaps it was her influence on Boaz that helped him to be more willing to accept Ruth. She became Ruth's other mother-one-law and great grandmother of King David.
Like Rahab we too can into God's rest by the finished work of God. We also get to join a community, the one known as the family of God. If you haven't put your trust into the finish work of God that Jesus took upon the cross, email me and I will be glad to help you.
